Beyond the White Western Lens: How to Diversify Classroom Literature

Tiffany asked herself the question, how can we diversify literature? She noticed the ways traditional Western literature courses lacked work from pre 20th century authors of color. In this presentation she shares specific books to incorporate into these courses and breaks down the importance of these voices in the larger Western European context.

Works mentioned:

Andalusian Poems translated by Christopher Middleton

The Woman of Colour by Anonymous

Enneads 1.6 and 5.8.1–2 by Plotinus (on beauty)

The Golden Ass: Being the Metamorphoses of Lucius Apuleius by Apuleius

Captain Pamphile by Alexandre Dumas

Hayy ibn Yaqdhan by Ibn Tufail
